Song of the Week! 7 June 2014

From the Taiko point of view, yesterday was the day of the CreoFuga songs, granting the first console ports for each of the contest winners. Today's song in the spotlight is one of those!

Techno and dubstep songs are a rare breed on Taiko no Tatsujin, but the latest CreoFuga contest gave us a couple of new songs made by contestants with these very two genres, with Hurtling Boys for the former and today's song for the latter.

Released as a challenge for the Taiko 2013 arcade tournament's second phase, DEBSTEP is the winning song entry from freelance composer Yaju (やじゅ) and as such, it's one of the first Namco Original tracks with the creator's nickname as the song's subtitle. While Yaju's original composition was titled Debu Step! (でぶすてっぷ!), the finished result on Taiko sounds quite different in comparison to the original submitted entry.

The 'Debstep!' currently on Taiko is actually an abridged, slightly-modified version of another CreoFuga song by Yaju, titled No blur in my justice. This track was originally used as an entry for the 2013 edition of the 'CreoFuga Next Generation Creative Artist Audition - BGM Recruitment Department' contest (which started some months after the Taiko contest), but after that contest ended, the song was instead cropped and used for Taiko, in effect combining the two songs together.

DEBSTEP! is yet another song with a slow BPM value with a 10* Oni mode, and it is NOT your typical 10*. The notes have a huge variety of beat patterns, ranging from 1/12 to 1/16 and 1/24, constantly switching between the two, but what really made DEBSTEP! stand out is the extremely slow half-speed scroll for the majority of the song, making 1st time plays an extremely difficult prospect indeed! It's not uncommon to see players turning on the Double Speed (Baizoku) modifier to play this song. However, as it was originally a Taiko Tournament 2013 song, where modifiers were barred from being used, the main intention of the half-scroll was to put pressure on contestants going into the Area Challenge.
